We’ve got, what, four anime portrait packs? Time for something different.

This mod adds around a hundred assorted furry and scalie portraits. Nearly all are sourced from members of the Starsector community.
Seriously, have you ever seen the replies to Alex’s twitter posts? Furries everywhere.

the Unofficial Starsector Discord and send theDragn#0580 a pm. (Just PM me, you don’t need to send a friend request.)
Rules:
– Send me a 128×128 png. Images must be color and should include the head and shoulders on a black background. See the portraits in the pack for examples.
– Images should meet some minimum standards of quality, and should be drawn/painted, not pixel art. See the portraits in the pack for examples. I’m not saying you need to go out and spend $600 on an oil painting of your fursona, but it should be at least decent.
– Also send me something to indicate that you actually own/commissioned/drew whatever you just sent me. Credit will remain anonymous unless you specifically ask for it in there.
– I don’t care if the original image is SFW/NSFW as long as it’s not obvious that it’s cropped from something explicit. (ie, a crop of a nude ref sheet is fine; a crop of an o-face is not.)
– Tell me what faction(s) you want your portrait to be in. I’m not going to add your art to a modded faction unless the author’s given permission for me to add portraits (apex design, exalted, keruvim).
– Tell me whether you want masculine or feminine pronouns. This will determine what pronouns the game uses in dialogue for players and NPCs with your portrait. (Starsector’s dialogue scripting doesn’t support gender-neutral or other pronouns, so you have to pick between masculine/feminine.)

Copy and past the contents of this mod’s /data/world/factions/player.faction into all the other .faction files, replacing what’s already there.

Eh. Not a fan of how the backlighting doesn’t fit with existing portraits, but I suppose that’s the problem with using existing assets instead of custom-making something.

While I agree that it’d be ideal to have vanilla-styled portraits, it’d be a ton of work (and require actual art skills, of which I have relatively little) to adjust the lighting. Regardless, this was never really intended to be immersive.

Honestly, I was looking for portrait packs the day before this released, and thought “This game has been out forever, I’m surprised there isn’t a furry/pony portrait pack.” I mean we got anime and cybermodding, biomodification and perhaps even xenos aren’t far off. Are furries considered blasphemous by the Luddic Church/Path?

Perhaps it’s fate, and perhaps, If you do think this heresy, you can erase the files that make them show up in your preferred factions, and have your own little crusade.

Well, I never thought I’d join an old style internet forum in 2021. I saw the note to send a PM via Discord for art but I figured I’ll need some feedback before I think about doing/sending more.

How well do these fit the aesthetic? Kinda did them in a rush so I’m not too sure if I missed anything. Eh, now that I’m looking at it the backlighting’s probably too strong. Oh well.

There have been a few, but they have been… let’s say less than suitable for posting here on the forums. Plus most of the ones I knew were just cropped shots of art and pretty much never had the artist’s or character owner’s permission. (Which is a problem with many portrait packs) This pack is good to post here because it is SFW AND it has the permission of everyone involved

Imo they’re really great. For something done in a rush they’re pretty darn good – I’d only recommend making them a little darker. The backlights look very solid tho

My personal opinion, it’s the vanilla style that doesn’t fit. I’d rather replace or remove every single vanilla portrait than have mods trying to follow that awful artstyle. Even this pack, heretical as it is, is preferable to that.

Those are really good! Might be rushed to you, but it looks good to me, and it actually follows the backlighting style, which is very neat. With your permission, I’ll add em in.

I’ve seen one floating around, and immediately recognized art that I knew they didn’t have permission to distribute, along with obvious porn crops. I’m trying to actually follow the rules with this one.

Can we maybe chill with the “exterminate the furries” rhetoric? I don’t think anyone minds what you do in your own game, but since some people here are furries, it’s… uncomfortable, at best.
